Funding Cuts Affecting Wirral Families

Posted on May 17, 2017 - News, The Hub

From the 1st of April we have had cuts to some of our funding streams.

As an organisation we have worked tirelessly throughout the year to secure funding but have been unsuccessful. It has been an extremely difficult and worrying time; we have tried our best to limit the impact this would have on families. Unfortunately the cuts will mean a reduction in the number of ‘Little Bees’ groups we are able to offer. The group supports young children with social and communication difficulties, providing vital early intervention and enables parents to receive respite and peer support.

If you are interested in raising funds for our groups please contact the Hub on 0151 608 8288

Quotes from parents

‘this group is a lifeline to my family and we can’t imagine not coming every week’

‘The support provided by Home-Start Wirral came at a time when I was sinking with the pressure of coping with my son’s behaviour and communication difficulties. I do not know where we would be without the Little bees group. To think future children and parents will be unable to access this support is heartbreaking’

‘I am so thankful for the support Home-Start Wirral have given to my child and family. I am praying funding is secured in the future so that families like mine can get the right support to enable their child to achieve’

‘This group is so important to me, the opportunity to meet other families and speak about my concerns has helped me so much. We will really miss everything about the group’

with IDEA’S – our new play project pilot

We are looking for current volunteers interested in taking part in our brand new pilot project called IDEA’s

  • Imagine
  • Discover
  • Explore
  • Adventures

The project will support families with children up to the age of 8 years old who struggle to engage with their children’s learning and have limited play opportunities. The aim is to help families develop creative indoor activities and access outdoor space with their children.

Volunteers will be asked to attend a training day on the 18th May 2017, here at The Home-Start Wirral Hub. This will be followed by four group sessions, where they will support parents and their children,  implementing what they have learnt.

Staff, volunteers and users of the Home-Start Hub in Woodchurch Lane, Prenton, have been left devasted after a break-in on Monday night.

Although the thieves left empty-handed, they caused a considerable amount of damage, ripping the fire alarm off the wall and damaging doors. It will cause a lot of disruption and upset to families using the centre.

Home-Start Wirral is a charity that supports families who are going through difficult times for a variety of reasons, including illness, disability of a child or bereavement.

The ‘Home-Start Hub’ opened at the former premises of the ‘Wirral Toy Library’ in Woodchurch Lane, in 2013.

Funded by various organisations including Wirral Council and public donations, it’s volunteers have supported 8,171 families over the last 15 years and will continue to do so.

Eggciting surprise for Wirral children

Posted on April 7, 2015 - The Hub, Uncategorized

EASTER has been made a little more eggciting for children at the Home-Start Hub by Merseyside Police officers.

The collection was co-ordinated by Birkenhead neighbourhood team Constable Claire Walker and Constable Paul Farnworth.

Police mascot “Bobby” and community champion Debbie Layfield – from Tesco’s Bidston store – helped to deliver the eggs as well as a number of raffle prizes.

Officers in the neighbour team have been collecting eggs from local organisations for the last three years.

This year, Easter eggs were kindly donated by Birkenhead YMCA, Tesco in Bidston, ASDA Grange Road and Marks & Spencer in Birkenhead.

Eggs were also delivered to Claire House Children’s Hospice and Arrowe Park Hospital.

PC Walker said: “It was a cracking day and the smiles on the children’s faces were absolutely fantastic for me and my colleagues to see.

“All the children that we came across received an egg and there are a huge amount of eggs left at these locations for children who may be receiving treatment over the Easter period, to hopefully put a smile on their faces!

“It was a real team effort, not just from the officers, who handed out the donations on the day, but also the organisations who kindly donated eggs and gifts whom I’d like to thank.

“It has been a pleasure for us to have brought a little bit of cheer to these children and their parents during what can be a very difficult time.”
