Home-Start Wirral’s ‘Time For You’ drop in breastfeeding support groups now run five days a week, at various locations across the Wirral.
Here at Home-Start Wirral we passionately believe that it is parents that are key in creating the secure and nurturing environment that will allow their children to flourish.
Life can often be a challenge, and a little bit of help when it’s most needed can make all the difference, allowing families to build their confidence and make the right choices for their children.
Could you be a Home-Start family support volunteer, providing non-judgemental practical and emotional support in a family’s own home for 3 hours a week?
If you are a parent or grandparent and can commit to completing a 10 week training course one day a week, you could be taking the first step to an extremely rewarding role as a Home-Start family support volunteer.
There are two opportunities coming up for new volunteers to complete the 10 week course of preparation:
Monday 30th April, 9:30am to 2:30pm, for 10 weeks.
Home-Start Hub, Woodchurch Lane
[No session on Monday 7th May (May Day bank holiday) and Monday 28th May (Half term week)]
Tuesday 1st May, 9:30am to 2:30pm, for 10 weeks.
Training room above Morrisons, New Brighton
[No session on Tuesday 29th May (Half term week)]
To find out more or to discuss booking a place on one of the two courses, give one of our friendly team a ring on 0151 608 8288.

Home-Start Wirral has always recognised the importance of quality training for its staff and volunteers.
Our shop in Claughton Village recently benefited from a training day targeted at increasing trading income.
Staff and volunteers joined forces, and enthusiastically took on board many tips and ideas to improve the presentation of the shop and make it more appealing to customers, as well as exciting ideas to increase our sales.
Regular training opportunities not only benefit Home-Start Wirral, but demonstrate our commitment to staff and volunteers, allowing everyone to learn new skills in retail.
Why not become our next volunteer! Benefit your local community, get to work in a lovely atmosphere and meet some fabulous people.
For more information give Mandy or Sue a ring on 0151 652 0020 or just pop into the shop, you will be made very welcome.
‘Family Support Coordinator’ Julie McGuinness, recently facilitated a valuable group support session with Neston volunteers. Dominic from ‘Energy Projects Plus’ delivered a two hour training session with volunteers, aimed at increasing their knowledge on energy efficiency, which can hopefully be passed on to families supported by Home-Start Wirral.
Energy Projects Plus is an independent not-for-profit organisation and a registered environmental charity, formed in 1995.
Their objective is to advance the education of the public about energy efficiency and other environmental initiatives, including the alleviation of fuel poverty. This is achieved by giving advice, raising awareness, and delivering training and educational work programmes to local communities.

Home-Start UK recently recognised Home-Start Wirral in their latest podcast.
How Home-Start Wirral has expanded their traditional home visiting support to meets the needs of the local community.
‘Little Movers’ is just one of the groups run by Home-Start Wirral, helping to support local families in ways that make a real difference, often providing a real lifeline when each day can be a struggle.
Despite these groups offering support in a different way to traditional home visiting, they maintain the culture of volunteering, giving volunteers an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the community in which they live.
Rachel is a mum whose little boy attends the ‘Little Movers’ group for children with additional needs, Debbie is one of the volunteers at the group. In the podcast Rachel and Debbie explain the difference that Little Movers has made to them.

Constantly looking for new ways to support families with young children, our latest initiative is in response to a growing realisation, that struggling financially is not something that only affects families reliant on benefits, but is increasingly affecting working families. Low wages and part time working means that many more families are falling into the poverty trap.
Our community shop is an attempt to reduce the weekly shopping bill for local families, making the purchase of essential items less of a burden on the weekly budget.
Currently operating on a very small scale, we are attempting to raise £3000 by the 8th January 2018, to develop this idea further. Sufficient space, storage and stock should allow us to develop this into a social supermarket, benefiting many struggling families in our local community.

Thanks to financial help from the ‘Neston Fund’, Home-Start Wirral are expanding their home visiting family support service to Neston, offering valuable support to families with young children.

From the 1st of April we have had cuts to some of our funding streams.
As an organisation we have worked tirelessly throughout the year to secure funding but have been unsuccessful. It has been an extremely difficult and worrying time; we have tried our best to limit the impact this would have on families. Unfortunately the cuts will mean a reduction in the number of ‘Little Bees’ groups we are able to offer. The group supports young children with social and communication difficulties, providing vital early intervention and enables parents to receive respite and peer support.
If you are interested in raising funds for our groups please contact the Hub on 0151 608 8288
Quotes from parents
‘this group is a lifeline to my family and we can’t imagine not coming every week’
‘The support provided by Home-Start Wirral came at a time when I was sinking with the pressure of coping with my son’s behaviour and communication difficulties. I do not know where we would be without the Little bees group. To think future children and parents will be unable to access this support is heartbreaking’
‘I am so thankful for the support Home-Start Wirral have given to my child and family. I am praying funding is secured in the future so that families like mine can get the right support to enable their child to achieve’
‘This group is so important to me, the opportunity to meet other families and speak about my concerns has helped me so much. We will really miss everything about the group’
