Can you make a difference?

Posted on April 28, 2018 - News, Volunteers

Here at Home-Start Wirral we passionately believe that it is parents that are key in creating the secure and nurturing environment that will allow their children to flourish.

Life can often be a challenge, and a little bit of help when it’s most needed can make all the difference, allowing families to build their confidence and make the right choices for their children.

Could you be a Home-Start family support volunteer, providing non-judgemental practical and emotional support in a family’s own home for 3 hours a week?

If you are a parent or grandparent and can commit to completing a 10 week training course one day a week, you could be taking the first step to an extremely rewarding role as a Home-Start family support volunteer.

There are two opportunities coming up for new volunteers to complete the 10 week course of preparation:

Course 1
Monday 30th April, 9:30am to 2:30pm, for 10 weeks.
Home-Start Hub, Woodchurch Lane
[No session on Monday 7th May (May Day bank holiday) and Monday 28th May (Half term week)]

Course 2
Tuesday 1st May, 9:30am to 2:30pm, for 10 weeks.
Training room above Morrisons, New Brighton
[No session on Tuesday 29th May (Half term week)]

To find out more or to discuss booking a place on one of the two courses, give one of our friendly team a ring on 0151 608 8288.

Energy Efficiency Awareness Training

Posted on March 25, 2018 - News, Volunteers

‘Family Support Coordinator’ Julie McGuinness, recently facilitated a valuable group support session with Neston volunteers. Dominic from ‘Energy Projects Plus’ delivered a two hour training session with volunteers, aimed at increasing their knowledge on energy efficiency, which can hopefully be passed on to families supported by Home-Start Wirral.

Energy Projects Plus is an independent not-for-profit organisation and a registered environmental charity, formed in 1995.

Their objective is to advance the education of the public about energy efficiency and other environmental initiatives, including the alleviation of fuel poverty. This is achieved by giving advice, raising awareness, and delivering training and educational work programmes to local communities.

Staff and volunteers had a fantastic time on Friday 2nd December at Mayer Hall in Bebington.

img_2359rev2This years ‘Volunteer Christmas Event’ was a tremendous success, giving us a chance to thank all our volunteers for their hard work throughout the year.

Without their continued efforts and support, Home-Start Wirral would not be able to continue supporting so many families within Wirral, and having a positive influence on so many young lives.

This years celebration was a little special, Home-Start Wirral having recently achieved the prestigious accolade of the ‘Investing In Volunteers’ award.

The event gave Mayor of Wirral Cllr Pat Hackett and Mayoress Mrs Elaine Hackett an opportunity to formally present Home-Start Wirral with the award. They were also joined by speakers Julia Hassall, Director of Children’s Services and Fiona Johnson, Director of Public Health, whose attendance contributed to making the occasion one to remember.

img_2350rev2Volunteers were greeted with welcome drinks and treated to a selection of delicious sandwiches and fancy cakes. The renovated and refurbished Mayer Hall was the perfect venue for this years celebration, the ideal setting to chat with Home-Start Wirral staff and volunteersp1080828 you may not have seen for a while. Generously donated raffle prizes also meant that volunteers went home with some lovely prizes that kept the fun and excitement of the afternoon going right to the very end.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and we hoped you enjoyed yourself.

We would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone involved with Home-Start Wirral a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New year.

Home-Start Wirral has been given the opportunity by the Lloyds Bank Foundation to apply for UK quality standard ‘Investing In Volunteers’, giving us the opportunity to demonstrate our continued support to volunteering.

Enhancing our volunteers’ experience and encouraging more people to volunteer with Home-Start Wirral has always been important to us, along with a necessity to raise our profile within the local community and with funders.

If we can achieve this prestigious accolade, we will not just achieve these objectives, but make further strides in ensuring our volunteers contribution is recognised, valued and supported.

We cannot do it without our dedicated volunteers, look under ‘About Us’ or click here to find out more information.
